Meta's New Image Templates (No Need for Third-Party Apps)
Meta just quietly shipped native Image Templates inside Commerce Manager. If you run Catalog Ads, you just watched an entire SaaS category die. No more Flexify. No more CustomPix hacks. It's all built-in now.
I opened Commerce Manager today and saw something new under Catalog > Image Templates > Create an image template.
Start from a blank canvas.
Template name: New Template.
DEALS badge, Meta branding, gradient backgrounds.
Meta just took the entire $49/mo feed-customization economy and put it inside Catalog Manager for free.
This is not a small UI update. This is Meta finishing what it started with Overlays.

What Meta Just Launched
Remember: Image Templates were renamed to Overlays. If you hover the tooltip for Add Overlays, it reads “formerly image template.”
But Overlays were always ugly and limited.
Advertisers complained because it was "just freaking ugly" with only font and background color tweaks.
Now look at the new builder:
In 2024, Meta introduced a small but potentially powerful tweak to its Advantage+ Catalog campaigns: dynamic overlays .
Advertisers can now add price, discount, and shipping labels directly onto product images – styled like stickers .
You’ve got four label options now: Current price, A strikethrough sale price, Percentage off, Free shipping .
You can turn each on or off, style them how you want, or let Meta choose what performs best .
Previously known as “labels” , now it's evolved into a full canvas editor:
- Start from blank canvas
- Name your template
- Add DEALS / % off badges natively
- Add your Meta branding / logo lockup
- Put your product on a gradient, lifestyle background without touching your Shopify feed
No CSV edits. No feed rules. No Shopify app injecting additional_image_link.

The 3rd Party Apps That Just Died
If you ever paid for:
- Flexify / CustomPix - to add logo + price + background to catalog images
- Abyssale / Marpipe / Bannerwise - to bulk-generate catalog overlays
- DataFeedWatch / FeedArmy / Productsup - to create custom image URL rules for Meta
- Smartly's Video Template solution that enabled dynamic overlays for brand elements, prices and CTAs
- FACES style hacks where agencies had to build video creatives because they did not have video creatives readily available
...your use case just got Sherlocked.
Why would a brand pay $79/mo for a feed tool to add a "30% OFF" sticker when Meta lets you toggle it natively, style it, and let AI choose the best performer automatically?
Meta even says it: "It also taps into Meta’s AI to automatically show the most relevant offer".
That was literally the pitch of every 3rd party overlay app: "Our AI chooses best badge."

Why Meta Did This Now
- Advantage+ Shopping needs creative control. Catalog Ads drive 70%+ of eCom spend. If the creative is ugly, performance drops, ROAS drops, spend drops. Meta can't let third-party apps dictate the look of its most important ad unit.
- AI Backgrounds + Overlays = Full creative generation. Last year Meta could generate backgrounds. Now it can generate full templates. Next step is GenAI product lifestyle shots directly in Catalog. Third-party apps can't compete with that level of native integration.
- Kill the data layer dependency. Every external feed tool is a potential break point. Product ID mismatches, feed disapprovals, image caching issues. By moving template logic into Catalog Manager, Meta owns the render pipeline end-to-end. Faster approvals, fewer errors, better compliance.
What This Means For You
If you run eCom:
- Go to Commerce Manager > Catalog > Image templates. Create 3 templates today: 1) Price only, 2) % off + Free Shipping, 3) Lifestyle gradient + Logo. A/B test them in your Advantage+ Catalog campaigns with the native overlay toggle.
- Cancel your single-purpose overlay app. Keep your feed management app only if you use it for multi-channel (TikTok, Google, Pinterest). For Meta-only custom images, it's dead weight.
- Prepare for video templates next. The same UI that now does image templates will soon do "Product on Video" - and that kills another wave of apps.
Classic Meta playbook: Let 3rd parties educate the market for 5 years, then ship it natively for free.
Flexify walked so Meta could run.
