Meta Should've Used a Different Name for Meta AI
Meta called it Meta AI and tied it to the most privacy-sensitive brand in tech. Users now see Discover feed prompts as public and fear AI contractors seeing personal data. A detached name could keep distribution across family of apps while building trust.
We assume Meta AI fails because of model quality. In reality, it fails because of naming.
Inspiration: Seeing Meta AI Discover feed show prompts publicly without awareness, plus news that AI contractors could see users personal data including selfies. Realizing the name Meta carries baggage that kills trust.

The Privacy Baggage Problem
AI Contractors at Meta Could See Users' Personal Data, Including Selfies.
That headline sticks.
Then there is Discover feed.
Users complained that its Discover feed is reportedly displaying user prompts publicly without them being aware.
La Repubblica reports that the automatic embedding of Meta's new virtual assistant into the WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger accounts of all EU citizens has raised privacy concerns.
One name ties all fears together. Meta AI.
When you call it Meta AI, every privacy story from 2018 to now attaches.

What Users Actually See
Days after reports that user prompts in Meta AI app were appearing on discover feeds, the app began popping up a consent notification.
Now, when a user taps Share, a new warning appears: Prompts you post are public and visible to everyone. Your prompts may be suggested by Meta on other Meta apps. Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information.
That warning should not exist.
If you need a warning that says do not share personal info in your AI, your brand already failed.
The feed is accessible via Facebook and is mostly harmless images, but interspersed is significant amount of personal queries.
The discover feed is full of users who apparently are unaware that they have been openly publishing their conversations.
Name is part of problem. Meta AI sounds like Meta watching.

Brand Architecture: Google Got It Right, Meta Did Not
Facebook Went Meta, But Google Isn't Alphabet.
When Zuckerberg renamed the company, people laughed at this as an attempt to avoid the negative publicity associated with Facebook.
There was one key difference.
Google barely uses this name for anything other than their corporate reports and still makes its money from Google.
Meta actually uses its new brand throughout its products.
That is the mistake.
Google's structure is:
- Alphabet is holding company, invisible to users.
- Google is trusted utility.
- Gemini, YouTube, Maps keep their own names.
Meta's structure is:
- Meta is holding company and product brand.
- Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp all say Meta AI inside.
Result: Every Meta AI privacy bug becomes Facebook privacy bug becomes Instagram privacy bug becomes WhatsApp privacy bug.
One brand failure spreads across family of apps, which boasts a combined 3.3 billion daily active users.
If family of apps is moat, single name is single point of failure.

The Ad Signal Problem
AI at Meta is the umbrella term the company uses for its AI products, including the Meta AI chatbot integrated into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The new policy adds that interactions with AI at Meta may be used to personalize ads.
Meta will begin using conversations with its AI assistant to personalize ads and feeds across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp starting December 16.
This is Meta's most aggressive attempt yet to monetize AI by turning private interactions into ad signals.
That is rational for business.
But for user psychology, it is disaster when named Meta AI.
User asks AI about health, then sees ad.
User thinks: Meta saw my private chat.
If same product was called something like Puffin or Mira, user would think: AI assistant learned.
Same data use, different trust cost.
Information asymmetry matters.
Users do not read policy. They read name.
Name Meta equals ads. Name detached equals assistant.

Better Naming Strategy: Detach But Keep Distribution
Meta should have done what it already does with Threads.
Threads is from Instagram, but has its own name and trust.
WhatsApp is by Meta, but feels separate.
Best playbook:
- Call AI something warm and standalone, like Willow, Atlas, or even Llama as consumer brand.
- Keep distribution: Built with Willow, inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook.
- Keep backend as AI at Meta for reporting, but never show Meta in frontend chat.
That way:
- Distribution across family of apps stays. 3.3 billion users still see it.
- Privacy concerns detach. Bug in Discover feed is Willow bug, not Meta spying bug.
- Ad personalization can be opt in with new brand promise.
Google did this. Gemini is not called Google AI in chat. It is Gemini.
OpenAI did this. ChatGPT is not called Microsoft AI.
Meta called it Meta AI and inherited 20 years of baggage.

My Take: Rename Is Moat
Technology changes rapidly but trust compounds slowly.
Meta thinks AI quality wins.
In reality, privacy by naming wins.
A detached name creates psychological air gap.
- Prompt feels private because name feels new.
- Warning feels less scary because brand feels fresh.
- Ad personalization feels like assistant learning, not surveillance.
Meta spent billions to rebrand company from Facebook to Meta to escape past.
Then it put Meta back into its most sensitive new product.
That undoes the rebrand.
If Meta wants AI to win across family of apps, it should ship same tech under different name.
Keep Meta for investors.
Give users something else to love.
