Custom Audiences Arrive in ChatGPT: The New ABM Frontier
ChatGPT Ads Manager just got its most performance-marketing feature yet: Custom Audiences. It's the same playbook that built Meta and Google Ads, now inside the AI that is eating high-intent search.
It's official. The ChatGPT Ads Manager has rolled out custom audiences.
OpenAI is now giving advertisers a familiar but important control: the ability to use their own customer and prospect lists inside ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI's Help Center now includes documentation for custom audiences in ChatGPT Ads, describing how advertisers can apply customer or prospect lists using email addresses or phone numbers.
That one feature changes what ChatGPT Ads is.

1. What Just Rolled Out
This is not a test banner. ChatGPT Ads has sent out an email to advertisers announcing new ChatGPT Ads Manager updates and ChatGPT Ads experience updates.
The updates include custom audiences, new overview tab, suggested ad drafts, as well as a refreshed ad card format and expanding ads in Japan and South Korea.
How it works:
- Upload: OpenAI is preparing to add custom audience targeting to its ChatGPT advertising platform, allowing advertisers to upload raw or SHA-256 hashed emails and phone numbers to filter which users see their campaigns. The interface spotted in gated rollout on May 14 shows CSV or TXT uploads of up to 512MB containing raw or SHA-256 hashed emails and phone numbers.
- Target or Exclude: They could then use those custom audiences to only show ads to select users (enables, for example, retargeting) or exclude users (enables, for example, hiding ads from existing customers).
- New controls around it: OpenAI added more features to ChatGPT Ads Manager, the ability to exclude your ads from showing based on geo-location and/or audience lists.
The rollout is currently in beta. OpenAI's self-service ads manager is now available in beta to U.S. advertisers, and brands can also buy ads through new adtech partners, Pacvue and Kargo.
OpenAI's position: ChatGPT will maintain answer independence, meaning that ads would not influence responses, and it would not show adverts to users it believes are under the age of 18.

2. Why This Changes ABM
Conversational AI now commands that massive share of high-intent search you mentioned, with 800 million weekly active users, a global rollout of ChatGPT ads is a matter of when, not if.
Traditional ABM flow: Google search -> click -> landing page -> form -> SDR -> maybe.
New ABM flow in ChatGPT: High-intent prompt like "best GTM tools for SaaS" -> ChatGPT knows this is your target account list -> micro-targeted ad card appears inside the answer flow -> click opens a business-specific agent, not a landing page.
You are bypassing search engine friction because there is no SERP.
There is a conversation.
If that conversation already knows the user is on your CRM list, your ad becomes a continuation, not an interruption.
Three immediate plays:
1. Closed-Lost Resurrection:
Upload your closed-lost from last 6 months. When that champion asks ChatGPT to evaluate competitors, your "We fixed X" story shows up.
2. Land-and-Expand Suppression:
Upload existing customers and exclude them from acquisition campaigns. No more wasting CPM on people who already pay you. Use that budget to target only expansion accounts.
3. Intent + Identity Match:
Layer custom audience + contextual intent. Don't show to everyone searching "cloud security." Show only when someone from your ABM list searches "cloud security" — that's precision no keyword can give you.

3. Playbook and Guardrails
If you're going to use this, do it right:
Privacy first: Upload SHA-256 hashed emails where possible. OpenAI says it matches on hashed values, you don't need to send raw PII if you hash client-side. Keep your list under 512MB, clean it, and respect opt-outs.
No lookalike audiences yet, but that's what FB/Meta brought next after first introducing custom audiences.
Creative matters more here: ChatGPT is testing suggested ad drafts and a refreshed ad card format.
This is not Google text ads. You need conversational-native creative, question, answer, and next action. Think agent launchers, not banners.
Measurement: OpenAI is also building Conversions API support and pixel-based tracking. Expect CPM and CPC bidding to remain, but conversion-focused ads are coming. Set up pixel now.
The risk: Users came to ChatGPT for unbiased answers. If retargeting feels creepy ("Hey Barbaros, I saw you were on our pricing page"), you break trust. The best ABM in ChatGPT won't say "We know who you are." It will say "Here's a tailored overview for teams like yours."
This is a new frontier for precision ABM, but the same rule applies: Just because you can micro-target existing leads directly within their AI interactions doesn't mean you should shout that you are doing it.
Use it to be helpful, not to stalk. In conversational AI, helpful wins.
