Apple Cash Split Bill: Apple Cleverly Uses AI On Something You Actually Do
While everyone was counting how many times Apple said "AI" at WWDC, they shipped the most useful one — point your camera at a restaurant bill and split it.
Inspiration: Watching 4 friends spend 7 minutes doing math at dinner, then 3 of them never Venmo. Apple realized the killer AI use case isn't a chatbot, it's avoiding the awkward "you had the espresso martinis" conversation.
1. The Awkward Problem Nobody Solved
There's nothing worse than going to a dinner with a big group of friends, opting out of drinking to save money, but then still having to pay for your friends' espresso martinis when the group decides to split the bill evenly.
Splitwise exists.
Tab exists.
No one uses them in real life because you have to convince 5 people to download an app at 10pm.
Apple saw it: P2P is not a tech problem, it's a social awkwardness problem.
2. How It Actually Works — Point And Split
WWDC 2026, iOS 27. Top Wallet feature for iOS 27 is probably bill splitting.
Flow is stupid simple:
With the new feature, you can point your iPhone camera at a receipt.
Then Siri mode in the Camera app will make each item selectable so that you can keep track of who got each item, and send people separate Apple Cash payment requests depending on what they actually ordered

"If you're grabbing a bite with friends and point your iPhone at the bill, then [you can] select what you ordered to split the tab with Apple Cash," said Apple VP of Software Sebastien Marineau-Mes
No typing.
Point, tap what you ate, done.
3. The AI Part — Receipt Understanding
This is Apple Intelligence doing invisible work.
Powered by Apple Intelligence, you simply take a photo of the receipt, and you'll then see a new option that lets you choose to split the bill with others.
Apple Intelligence works to extract the key details from the bill, like the items ordered and the quantities, the tip, and the total
Users can scan or upload a receipt to split a bill with Apple Cash, with Wallet calculating each person's items, tax and tip
On-device models. Not sending your bill to ChatGPT.
It recognizes line items, quantities, tip, tax, then prorates fairly.
The old way: photo -> manual math. New way: Visual Intelligence reads it for you.
4. Where It Lives — Wallet + Messages + Watch
This is not a standalone app. That's the point.
When using the new Siri mode in the Camera app to scan a receipt, you'll see the option to Split Bill with Apple Cash
From here, the Wallet app open and you'll be presented with options to 'Request' payment from others or 'Pay Your Share'
Once Wallet tallies the amounts, it fires off Apple Cash payment requests to each person. The feature also supports Apple Watch, so you can approve payments right from your wrist
In the U.S. only, iOS 27 allows you to split bills with a new feature powered by Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence.
This capability is available in the Apple Wallet and Messages apps, or by using the new Siri mode in the Camera app
iMessage makes it organic. No link to download. It just appears as Apple Cash request like any other.
5. Why This Kills Venmo And Splitwise A Little
Adding bill sharing to its P2P services could dislodge volume from peers like Venmo and Cash App, for which friends and family payments are their bread and butter
It would also give Apple Cash a more practical role in everyday group payments, an area where apps such as Venmo and Cash App are widely used
It does not simply add convenience but eliminates the need to open outside tools entirely, posing an existential threat to user engagement for platforms like Splitwise and PayPal's Venmo
Venmo processed $275B+ annual volume. Cash App 57M MAU. Their moat was social graph + habit.
Apple's moat is: you already have it.
No account, no username, no "what's your Venmo?"
A restaurant bill split with Apple Cash by pointing a camera at it — that demo got more applause than any LLM benchmark.
6. The Pattern: Apple Uses AI On Everyday Interactions
Apple said AI 28 times at WWDC. Google said it 100 times at I/O.
Difference: Apple shipped Visual Intelligence expands beyond iPhone — The assistant can also perform actions such as splitting restaurant bills using Apple Cash
Not "ask AI to write a poem about your bill."
It's: point camera at real world -> AI does useful action -> money moves.
Same playbook as:

7. The Catch — US Only (For Now)
One small catch: Apple Cash remains a U.S.-only service, so this functionality won't be available in many countries
Same for Split Bill. US only at launch.
Also, people you bill do NOT need to download anything, but they do need Apple Cash enabled to pay instantly. If not, it falls back to Messages request.
For Europe, this is still a demo. For US, it's an instant Venmo killer at brunch.
8. My Take: Wallet Is Becoming Your Life OS
My take: Apple is slowly turning Wallet into what WeChat Pay is in China, but with privacy.

Step 3: Money movement between friends (Apple Cash Split Bill)
