- Description: A San Francisco startup says it turned mercury into gold with fusion neutrons. The physics checks out. The economics do not, not yet.

On October 21, 2026, Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco startup founded in 2023, announced that it had converted mercury into stable gold using fusion generated neutrons.

The company reported a production rate 10 times higher than CERN's previous result.

The claim has not been independently verified. The company has not disclosed how much gold it produced or what it cost.

The distinction matters. There is a huge difference between creating gold atoms in a lab and manufacturing gold profitably at scale. The first is scientifically plausible. The second remains unproven.

### 1\. The Announcement

Marathon's story spread quickly because it sounds like alchemy made real. A startup claims to make gold, with a fusion twist, and beats CERN by an order of magnitude.

The core claim is narrow: mercury plus neutrons equals gold.

The headline number, 10 times CERN, is not a full production comparison. It is a rate claim based on limited public data.

### 2\. The Physics Genuinely Works

The underlying process is nuclear transmutation.

It changes the nucleus itself, not electrons through chemistry.

The proposed reaction is straightforward in outline:

Mercury-198, with 80 protons, is struck by a high energy neutron.

The reaction ejects two neutrons and produces mercury-197\. Mercury-197 is radioactive. It decays by electron capture, turning one proton into a neutron.

The result has 79 protons.

That is genuine gold, gold-197, stable gold.

This is established nuclear physics, not pseudoscience.

Marathon's 2025 research presented a computational model at the American Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics meeting.

### 3\. What Has Actually Been Demonstrated

| Claim | Assessment |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------- |
| Mercury can be converted into gold | Established physics |
| Marathon has a plausible mechanism | Yes |
| Marathon created gold in September 2026 | Company reported, unverified |
| Producing tonnes of gold annually | Simulation only |
| Producing gold profitably | Not demonstrated |

The company shared gamma ray measurements consistent with its proposed reaction. That is more meaningful than a bare announcement, but it is not independent replication.

CERN reported producing just 29 picograms of gold over its 2015 to 2018 run.

Those nuclei were also extremely short lived. Marathon has not published enough information to make a proper production rate comparison.

### 4\. Could The Economics Eventually Work

Marathon's research estimates that a future fusion plant generating 1 GW of thermal power could produce roughly 2 metric tonnes of gold per year.

That is about 0.05 percent of global annual mined production, based on approximately 3,672 tonnes mined in 2025.

The genuinely clever part is the model: generate gold as a byproduct of electricity production, rather than building an enormous reactor solely to manufacture gold.

Three barriers remain serious.

First, commercial fusion is not here yet.

Sustaining commercially competitive fusion power remains an enormous engineering challenge, especially neutron damage, tritium supply and reactor maintenance.

Second, material processing is non trivial.

Marathon's own research estimates that radioactive contaminants in the recovered gold could require around 14 to 18 years of decay storage to meet stringent handling criteria, depending on purity standard.

Third, production estimates depend on simulated reactor designs.

Nobody has demonstrated the proposed blanket operating continuously at the required scale.

### 5\. Is Marathon Fusion Legitimate

Several credibility signals are meaningful.

Marathon raised a reported 5.9 million dollar seed round in 2024 with backing from 1517 Fund and mining company Anglo American.

The US Department of Energy also has an official December 2025 project record supporting development of its plasma centrifuge technology.

Independent physicists, including Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory's Ahmed Diallo, have described the theoretical proposal as intriguing and scientifically plausible, while acknowledging outstanding engineering challenges.

More interesting is the broader strategy: producing valuable medical isotopes used in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

That could provide a commercial pathway before gigawatt scale fusion electricity becomes viable.

### 6\. Conclusion: Factories, Not Just Power Stations

Marathon Fusion splits into three potential investment theses.

**Near term:** Isotope separation and medical isotope production.

This is the more credible commercial opportunity.

**Medium term:** Building fusion subsystems and neutron generation technology for other customers.

**Long term:** Producing gold alongside electricity, possibly improving fusion economics dramatically, but only if commercial fusion and the proposed transmutation process both scale successfully.

Marathon Fusion should be taken seriously as a deep tech startup.

The announcement should not be treated as evidence that gold scarcity is about to disappear.

The most interesting idea is not necessarily cheap gold.

It is that fusion reactors might become factories for valuable elements and isotopes, rather than merely power stations. That could ultimately be a much bigger technological opportunity.
