- Description: GTA 6 is bringing back six stars for the first time since 2009, but the real revolution isn't the star count — it's the heat system underneath. Cops now know your hat, your shirt, your car, and that Jason and Lucia are a couple.

There are dozens of mechanics considered core to Grand Theft Auto's identity. The wide variety of vehicles, a cast of oddball criminals, radio stations playing hit after hit, toilet humor packed into every billboard.

But there's one thing more foundational than all of them: car chases.

Since the very beginning, the central hook has been committing crimes and getting away with it. The working title for the original GTA was Racing Chase.

That idea (Cinema's best getaways manifested as gameplay) became the Wanted system.

And in GTA 6, Rockstar is rebuilding it from the ground up.

### Six Stars Are Back (First Time Since 2009)

Quick history lesson: Originally represented by four pixelated police heads, it evolved into the trademark star system. Get a single star and a couple of beat cops will turn up.

Rack up a full six stars and you'll summon a battalion of militarized law enforcement.

After Grand Theft Auto 5 dropped the number of stars by one to both streamline the system and match the five in the title, GTA 6 sees the full six stars return to the HUD for the first time since 2009's Chinatown Wars.

But star count is the least interesting part.

As Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained during their hands-off demo at Edinburgh HQ, there's an elaborate new heat system adding granularity beneath those stars.

### The New Heat System: Cops Know What You're Wearing

This is where it gets wild.

The police know what you look like down to individual items of clothing. So putting on a hat and glasses can make it a little harder for them to spot you.

But if you really want to throw them off the scent, you're going to have to change your whole outfit.

A fresh change of clothes can be found in nearby shops, or if you're a prepared player, stashed in the boot of your car.

Sitting beneath the row of wanted stars are a series of new red icons, each of which identifies the level of information police have on you:

- **Silhouette** \- police have a physical description of you
- **Clothes hanger** \- police know what clothing you're wearing
- **Camera** \- police have witnessed you on CCTV security footage
- **Vehicle icon** \- police have identified your current vehicle
- **Couple icon** \- they know Jason and Lucia are a couple, and splitting them up can be an effective strategy

In the demo, Jason purchased a baseball cap from a convenience store, which when worn removed the description icon from the HUD, but it didn't remove the clothing icon.

Same clothes = still identifiable.

New hat = physical description out of date.

If only giving Arthur Morgan mutton chops granted him the same peace of mind.

### You're Not Just Wanted. You're Hunted.

These factors influence how police AI tracks you through the state of Leonida.

Your crimes can be witnessed by police or reported to them, and circumstances dictate how much police know about you.

Could Rockstar have gone as far as to create a system where cops can build a profile via Snapmatic and Life Invader photos posted by Vice City's social media obsessed public?

GTA V's pedestrians were able to call 911 from phones. Now the wider population will impact the wanted system in additional ways.

It's clear Rockstar intends to ratchet up tension.

You're not just wanted by the cops, but actively hunted by a force that can utilize multiple information sources to narrow their search.

It's a natural evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2's bounty system brought into the modern world. As in Red Dead, you become wanted in specific regions, and returning to that area will see you face consequences.

The in-game map will tell you where you have heat. Police can linger after a crime.

It's not a good idea to return to the scene of a crime.

### How You Commit Matters More Than What You Commit

This is the biggest gameplay shift:

Hollow Wanted Star: A hollow wanted star is displayed when police are responding to a crime but have no information who the perpetrator is.

Denying the flow of incriminating data to ensure you only trigger hollow stars is an entire gameplay approach.

Tactical implications:

- **Stealth is viable:** Jason crouched to keep out of a police officer's line of sight. Avoid gaze of security guards, civilians, and cameras. Tactically eliminate CCTV networks before they call in reports.
- **Disguise meta:** Salon after a bank robbery to turn a gorgeous hairstyle into a buzzcut. Complete change of clothes in your getaway vehicle. Full body tattoo after assassination? Maybe too much, but you get idea.
- **Mask system returns:** A securely tied bandana or rubbery famous face will at least limit details witnesses can report, building on RDR2 rules.
- **Intimidation > Violence:** Jason aimed a gun at aggressors but held short of pulling trigger. Enemies fled. Crime was reported but police weren't responding to violent crime, so wanted level stayed low. You can save yourself a lot of aggro if you just hold back from outright violence.

### Why This Matters

The changes tie into Rockstar's larger intent:

This is the GTA you know and love, but each part has additional layers that allow you to drill deeper than ever before.

By enhancing the wanted system as well as interlink mechanics like carjacking, Rockstar is making sure that in GTA 6, things you've done a million times before have potential to feel brand new.

For 25 years, getting rid of wanted level meant: evade cops, find Pay 'n' Spray.

In GTA 6, reducing wanted level is about actively putting them off your scent.

How you commit a crime is just as important as the crime itself.

And that's a perfect foundation for the most immersive Vice City ever.
