- Description: Old metric was cost per drone. New metric is cost per resolved target. Better ROI means Founders Fund backed players win more contracts.

### Old Math Is Broken

Modern war has inverted economics. Price of weapon is increasingly disconnected from value of target it can threaten. A comparatively inexpensive FPV, loitering munition or naval drone can force response from systems costing orders of magnitude more.

**Examples:**

- A $500 drone can destroy a $10 million tank, illustrating cost effectiveness as tool of attrition with ratios reaching as high as 20,000 to 1.
- A $35,000 drone can force defender to fire multimillion dollar interceptor. That asymmetry is changing everything.
- Modern surface to air missile interceptor can demand outlay of three to five million dollars, whereas mass produced expendable drone it shoots down might cost meager twenty thousand dollars.
- US had to fire Patriot interceptor missiles costing $4 million per round to take down Iran's Shahed 136 drones priced in 30 million won range, about $22k.
- Multi million dollar interceptor missile fired by air defence cannot sustainably counter waves of attritable drones costing fraction of price.

Cost per engagement for attritable interceptors is hundreds to low thousands of dollars, expensive relative to electronic warfare but sustainable relative to missiles. Traditional missiles are unsustainable at scale.

### New Metric: Cost Per Resolved Target

Attritable warfare's key economic metric is increasingly cost per resolved target, not cost per drone.

What is attritable? The REWD3 is an attritable system, meaning its low unit cost allows acceptable loss in high risk missions.

Estimated unit production cost $1,300 to $16,000 plus versus Shahed 136 target $20k to $38k. REWD3 is 1.5x to 29x cheaper than target, cost effective attrition.

Even $35,000 per expendable munition is order of magnitude above what modern attritable warfare economics demand.

The Drone Dominance Program cost trajectory from $5,000 to $2,000 per unit is calibrated against this reality.

A commander who must authorize destruction of $35,000 system to neutralize target makes fundamentally different battlefield calculus than one who can approve expenditure of $2,000 system.

Mass at low cost changes tactical behavior, operational tempo.

So metric shifts:

- Old: how cheap is my drone.
- New: how many targets resolved per dollar spent, including losses, reloads, tempo, and sustained pressure.

Measuring success by targets resolved per dollar, not drone price, means more missions completed, higher attritional advantage, sustained pressure at lower total cost, faster tempo, greater coverage, better ROI. Percent ROI improved.

Laser example shows logic: if drone costing few thousand dollars can compel expenditure of interceptor worth several million, laser system that engages same target at energy cost measured in dollars per shot would fundamentally alter economic calculus of saturation warfare.

Tytan's Interceptor S, AI powered drone capable of neutralizing hostile FPV drones via kinetic strikes or warheads, offers 5 km operational range and 300 km per hour speed, making it cost effective alternative to traditional anti aircraft systems.

### Better ROI Means New Players Win

This is why new defence players backed by venture win contracts.

Adaptable, scalable solutions over large scale hardware, favoring software and AI driven systems that offer better ROI.

Modernization challenge creates market for both traditional contractors and emerging niche players that specialize in autonomous drones, electromagnetic defence and low cost asymmetric solutions.

These technologies promise high strategic returns without capital intensity of conventional platforms.

Key example: Anduril.

- In 2017 Thiel and Founders Fund backed Luckey again, this time startup Anduril, defence tech company building autonomous weapons systems and surveillance for US military. Founders Fund led Anduril's first funding rounds, company has since grown into one of most valuable defence startups in world, now worth $61 billion.
- Anduril closed $1.5 billion from backers including Founders Fund and Sands Capital.
- Costa Mesa company closed $2.5 billion Series G round this summer. Founders Fund led financing, which more than doubled 8 year old Anduril's valuation to $30.5 billion.
- Army awarded Anduril 10 year contract worth up to $20 billion to deploy Lattice platform across counter drone operations.
- Backed by Founders Fund, Anduril has secured major military contracts including programs for autonomous aircraft and counter drone systems.

Product level: Anduril's Barracuda cruise missiles, which can be produced twice as fast and at 30 percent lower cost than conventional systems, highlight sector shift toward agile, cost effective solutions.

Add other Founders Fund backed names like Hadrian, plus a16z, 8VC backing Shield AI, Saronic which raised $1.75 billion at $9.25 billion valuation and holds $392 million Navy contract.

Why they win: software defined platform, modular, rapid updates, data driven efficiency, delivers stronger return on investment. Adaptable scalable software plus AI equals better ROI.

When metric is cost per resolved target, not cost per exquisite platform, legacy primes charging $4 million per intercept lose.

New players offering $2,000 attritable resolver with AI autonomy win.

Future contracts will flow to those who resolve more targets per dollar. That is Founders Fund defence portfolio.
