### What Is AutoWarCom

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the creation of a four star Autonomous Warfare Command on September 30 2026, telling 600 O-3 officers and E-6 noncommissioned officers at Marine Corps Base Quantico that it will scale drones, robotics and AI across the entire military.

He calls it AutoWarCom. It is to be a functional combatant command with service like authorities, its own budget and manpower, and new military career fields for the people who fly and fight with unmanned systems.

The command will be called the Autonomous Warfare Command, Hegseth said during his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. AutoWarCom is expected to become operational by October 2027 and will be led by a four star officer.

The new command underscores the US push to move away from costly conventional weapons platforms towards cheaper, AI driven unmanned systems that have proved decisive in recent conflicts such as the Russia Ukraine war.

The establishment is expected to enhance US operational capabilities, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

Hegseth framed it as institutionalizing and supercharging the era of super intelligence, robotics and autonomous systems, all in order to win.

The target date is October 1 2027.

### High Low Mix: Lightning and Wind Plus Rain

For 40 years, the United States bought quality over quantity.

The pace of war is changing faster than the process to support it, Hegseth said, before laying out a high low mix in which exquisite weapons are the lightning and massed attritable drones are the wind and rain of the same storm.

This is the doctrine AutoWarCom exists to execute.

Exquisite platforms remain, but mass matters again.

Russia Ukraine war proved attritable drones mass deployed with decisive real time adaptation can dominate. AutoWarCom moves forces from high cost low quantity human crewed to low cost scalable repeatable.

The budget tells the story. The US military is seeking 54.6 billion dollars for drone development in the 2027 fiscal year budget, a dramatic increase from 226 million dollars this year.

The FY27 request seeks 75 billion dollars across drones and counter drone work.

### Project Agincourt: The Builder

It was the first of six announcements in the speech, and the only one built around hardware.

Until October 2027 an interim effort called Project Agincourt, run out of the Pentagon's unmanned systems office, is supposed to build the path to it.

The Project Agincourt memo directs the Direct Reporting Portfolio Manager for Unmanned Systems, or DRPM-UxS, to lead the effort, and gives it 30 days to submit a plan of action and milestones with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Agincourt adds two missions. The first is the pathway: organizational shifts, legislation, and career tracks for officers and enlisted.

The second is a prototype of what Hegseth calls warfighting acquisition. The output it wants is not a particular drone but a repeatable procurement system that keeps adapting in combat on the right side of the cost exchange.

Decisions and dollars move to combatant commands and frontline units, and systems get tested in exercises and, where possible, in combat.

The name is a 1415 reference.

Hegseth's version has the English winning with longbows and moving their fletchers, the arrow makers, up to the front to keep the rate of fire going.

The fletchers in this analogy are engineers and startup founders embedded with operators.

Owen West, director of the Defense Innovation Unit since March 2, becomes chief executive of DRPM-UxS for the next year, with Navy SEAL Senior Chief Max Strasiser as chief operating officer.

West gets strategic risk, resources and scale. Strasiser gets operational problem solving and combat employment.

The playbook is already tested: a 1.1 billion dollar, four phase buy of one way attack drones in which military operators fly and score vendors aircraft, and orders follow the leaderboard. Gauntlet I produced orders for about 30,000 drones.

By August 25, winners had delivered 13,440 of 22,320 required.

That program bans motors and batteries from China starting in Phase II. Whatever AutoWarCom buys will inherit that rule.

### Project Meridian: Mapping Future War From Subterranean To Cislunar

He also commissioned Project Meridian, a 120 day future warfare study co directed by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich under Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael, ending in a public report with a classified annex.

The high level advisory panel will be co led by Elon Musk alongside defence tech czar Palmer Luckey and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The project will operate under supervision of department's Chief Technology Officer, Emil Michael.

He ordered the creation of a four star Autonomous Warfare Command to scale drones, robotics and autonomous systems and set a goal to stand it up by Oct 1 2027\.

The secretary launched Project Meridian, a 120 day study co led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich to map future weapons and doctrine, and set Project Agincourt to speed procurement and fielding of attritable systems.

Project Meridian has been given a strict 120 day deadline to ruthlessly map the trajectory of wars, domains and technologies.

The assessment will culminate in a public presentation of its broad findings alongside a classified annex for military leadership.

Hegseth outlined an expansive mandate stretching from under the Earth to beyond the moon. Rather than formulating new military strategies, the group will focus on identifying the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master, while actively steering the process of discovering, developing, and fielding systems for future generations.

Scope runs from subterranean to cislunar, from underground battlefields to space. Report due January 28 2027.

### Why AutoWarCom Changes Future Warfare

AutoWarCom is the 12th UCC, first new command since Space Command in 2019\. Creating a new command is not common.

The move reflects Pentagon push to shift from costly conventional platforms to cheaper AI driven autonomous systems.

It creates three structural shifts:

1. Career tracks for autonomous warfighters. Dedicated occupational frameworks, new military career fields for people who fly and fight with unmanned systems, enlisted and officer paths separate from traditional aviation.
2. Service like authorities plus combatant command authorities. Own manpower, budget, acquisition authority to field autonomous and robotic systems across services. Will have test and evaluation powers and ability to scale.
3. Frontline driven acquisition. Prototype warfighting acquisition cycles linking frontline operators with commercial entrepreneurs. Engineers embedded at front, dollars at combatant commands, leaderboard based procurement that rewards delivery not PowerPoint.

The fastest peacetime shift in modern military history is not slogan. It is org chart plus acquisition reform plus massive budget shift from 226 million to 54.6 billion plus China free supply chain plus startup founders at front.

AutoWarCom institutionalizes super intelligence, robotics and autonomous systems as core warfighting function, not side project.
